What does a sports podiatrist actually do?

What is a sports podiatrist?

A Podiatrist is a specialist of the foot, ankle and lower limb. Sports Podiatrists (or musculoskeletal Podiatrists) primarily focus on the way the foot interacts with the ground and try to consider the loads or forces that the lower limb has to contend with during high impact sporting activity.

This is often also referred to as ‘biomechanics’ which is essentially the application of mechanical principles to living organisms

SPORTS PODIATRY MAY INVOLVE:

  • Movement analysis to identify potential risk factors for future injury
  • Video gait analysis to assess lower limb movement patterns
  • Joint mobilisations or sports taping
  • Evaluation of current athletic footwear
  • Injury diagnosis and implementation of an appropriate management plan
  • Provision of foot orthoses to reduce damaging forces within injured tissues
  • Recommendation of diagnostic imaging including X-Rays, MRIs or CT scans
  • Onward referral to other specialists for further investigations

SPORTS PODIATRY MAY HELP WITH SOME OF THESE INJURIES:

  • Sports related Lower back pain
  • Hip or knee pain
  • Calf or Achilles tendon issues
  • Exercise induced leg and shin pain
  • Ankle problems
  • Heel and/or plantar fascia pain
